FAQ

What is clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates is Pilates delivered by a physiotherapist as part of a treatment plan, based on an assessment of your specific problem rather than a general class programme. Exercises are selected and progressed according to what your body currently needs, and adjusted session by session as your movement and strength change.

How is clinical Pilates different from a normal Pilates class?

A studio class teaches a set programme to a group at a shared level. Clinical Pilates starts from an individual assessment, targets a specific problem such as back pain or a knee injury, and is progressed by a physiotherapist who can change the plan mid-session. At Octopus Clinic it is one-to-one, 60 minutes, £148.

Why does one-to-one clinical Pilates cost more?

Because it is a physiotherapy appointment rather than a fitness class. The £148 covers a specialist Pilates physiotherapist’s time for a full hour, including assessment, exercise selection, hands-on correction and programme design. A group class costs a fraction of that because the instructor’s attention is divided and the programme is fixed.

Can Pilates help my back pain?

Yes, and it is one of the better-evidenced approaches for recurrent lower back pain. Its value is in building trunk, hip and back strength and improving movement control, which reduces recurrence. It works best after an assessment has established which movements ease and which provoke your pain, so the programme suits your presentation.

Who is clinical Pilates suitable for?

It suits people with recurrent back or neck pain, those returning from injury or surgery, people who find general classes provoke their symptoms, and anyone who has been told to strengthen but is unsure how to do it safely. It is also used for postural problems and as a bridge between treatment and independent training.

How many clinical Pilates sessions will I need?

Many patients use a short block of four to six one-to-one sessions to learn a programme properly and then continue independently or move to a class, returning periodically for progression. Others with long-standing problems continue longer. The intent is to make you independent rather than to keep you attending.

Do you offer Pilates classes as well as one-to-one sessions?

The prices page lists only the one-to-one option, so if classes exist they are invisible to search; if they do not, saying so plainly stops the wrong enquiries.
