Ian has over twenty years of experience within elite sports and private practice including South Africa cricket, Northern Titan Cricket, Northern Blues Hockey, professional golfers including Ernie Els, and also the GB gymnastics team when they toured SA. He set up and ran a successful clinic in South Africa before moving to the UK with his family in 2019. Since then he has quickly developed an excellent reputation with Sports Consultants and Orthopaedic Surgeons with whom he enjoys working to ensure the best outcomes for his patients.

Ian qualified with a BSc (Hons) at the University of Pretoria in 1997 alongside two years of a Human Movement Science degree. He believes in going back to basics by first mobilizing the soft tissue or joint with his hands and then overseeing a gradual increase in active rehabilitation exercises. Ian achieves an excellent balance of manual therapy and exercise rehabilitation to help his patients. He has also completed courses in kinesio-taping, dry needling, and hydrotherapy. Ian’s greatest reward is seeing the joy on his patients’ faces when they resume pain-free training.

If you have a sports injury and want to get back to your beloved sport, or if you are suffering from shoulder or back pain, or are looking for someone who has plenty of experience with post-op recovery, Ian is the physio for you.

In his spare time, Ian enjoys playing any ball sport. He is a single-figure golfer and past provincial hockey player. Having a social beer with family and friends is also high on his agenda during his downtime.

It is essential to reposition the shoulder joint correctly, which you must do under the guidance of a physiotherapist to make sure you dont do more damage. The most common incorrect position is the shoulderblade being held too far forwards and downwards. Often people think that pulling the shoulders and arms backwards will sort this out. Actually this can make it worse!

Please scroll down to the bottom for specific advice on how to adjust your posture in the car to avoid or reduce pain.

Sitting posture at work

Ask your colleague to take photos of the way you naturally sit at work with a digital camera or smart phone. Take pictures from the side and from the back including your feet, legs, back, head and hands. Then take it in for your Physiotherapist or Osteopath to see, who will then advice you on how to make changes specific to your body.

You can do the same with a friend or family member for sitting in the car or sitting at home watching TV! However, the following generic advice will give you a good start.

The pain was so acute that the doctor had put me on Tramadol. After only two sessions with Lucy Macdonald, who treated me with acupuncture and massage, I was able to quit this morphine based medication. I was left with numbness down the left side of my right hand and continued treatment. Not only did this dramatically improve but the feeling in the right side of that hand, rendered absolutely numb for 54 years, came back. This has astonished everyone, even a consultant. I was completely unable to feel even a severe burn and now my whole hand is normal.

However, true carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by irritation of the median nerve that runs though the wrist joint which results in pins and needles, weakness and pain in the arm and hand. The best way to treat carpal is to make changes to the way the wrist is being used to reduce the irritation of the nerve. This may include taping, wearing a splint, massage and acupuncture.

In fact often the wrist is being used excessively because there is weakness or instability in the shoulder. Therefore adjusting how the hand, wrist and shoulder are being used can be very effective.

If these measures do not work then injections or can be considered but can have variable results.

We work closely with Orthopaedic Consultants to ensure that patients make the most of their surgery, achieve their goals and recover fully.

There is a fine balance between ensuring you rest, avoiding certain movements or positions to prevent damage to vulnerable structures and simultaneously ensuring the correct movements are made at the right time to prevent contractures, secondary complications and sub-optimal recovery. We have extensive years experience working with specialist spinal surgeons and therefore know exactly where this balance lies and will confidently lead you on your path to full recovery. There are so many questions that people quite rightly have pre and post op – for example: how long do I have to take off work; when can I drive; what position should I sleep in; should I use ice or heat; when can I go for a run; can I play rugby again?; and many more. We will work closely with your surgeon to make sure these questions are answered clearly and thoroughly. Ultimately with us you are in the right hands to achieve your post-op goal – whether it is to be able to lift your children, sit at your desk at work, go for a run, play rugby or win Gold for Team GB powerlifting!
