What are the three most important things about a running programme? By Marathon Physio Lucy Macdonald

Be realistic

Be realistic. One of the most common causes of injury is people training inconsistently, sporadically or over-training. This is often because they have set themselves a training programme that is impossible considering the other commitments in their lives or that their target time is unrealistic. Make sure you fit your training programme around your life, allow for flexibility and don’t let your ego set an unachievable target time for you!

Rest

Make recovery, rest and sleep part of your programme (more on this below.)

Quality over quantity

Focus on quality not quantity. Interval training is more important than distance (more on this below.)
