Post-Operative Shoulder

Please read ‘how the shoulder works‘ before reading the following.

The complexity of the shoulder joint, the amount we use it for day to day activities and the degree of strain we put through it during training and sports can result in conditions that need surgery. Sometimes repair of damaged structures is necessary where rehab alone will not resolve the problem.

We work closely with the top shoulder Orthopaedic Surgeons to ensure that, if the problem cant be resolved with Physiotherapy and Osteopathy alone, we can send you to the very best for surgery.

Pre-op it is important to prepare fully so that you can make the most of your surgery and achieve your goals after it.

Post-surgery, there is a fine balance between ensuring you rest, avoid certain movements and positions to prevent damage to vulnerable structures, and simultaneously ensuring the correct movements are made at the right time to prevent contractures, secondary complications and substandard recovery.

You should work closely with your consultant, physio or osteo who know where this balance lies and can confidently lead you on your path to full recovery. It is very important that you understand the reasoning behind predicted timescales of return to training, and factors that will affect this. We will make sure to give you as much advice as we can to help you achieve a smooth return to activity and achieve your goals, in as little time as possible, but without cutting corners.
